EPA News
DO you know about EPA's Risk Management Program (RMP) rule? The RMP rule is Section
112r of the Clean Air Act and was promulgated on July 20, 1996. It requires all
owner/operators of stationary sources of hazardous chemicals to develop and implement a
program that ensures the chemicals will be handled safely and minimizes the possibility
and consequences of an acidental release. This program must be submitted to US EPA by June
21, 1999. If your utility handles, stores, or uses any one of 139 hazardous chemicals at
or above the listed threshold quantities, it must comply with the RMP rule. Chemicals and
thresholds to water and wastewater are:
- Chlorine Dioxide, at 1,000 lba.
- Chlorine, at 2,500 lbs.
- Sulfur Dioxide (Anhydrous), at 5,000 lbs.
- Ammonia (Anhydrous), Propane, or Methane, at 10,000 lbs.
- Ammonia (Aqueous), at 20,000 lbs.
This Teleconference is being sponsored by the American Water Works Association. it will
be held on Oct. 22, 1998, from 9:30 am - 3:30 pm at University of Hartford, West Hartford,
