Azurix
America awarded
London, Ontario water contract
hamilton, ON Azurix North America announced that it has been awarded a 10-year contract to operate and
maintain the Lake Huron and Elgin Area Primary Water Supply Systems.
These water supply systems serve the
municipalities of London, St. Thomas, Lambton Shores, South Huron, Bluewater, North
Middlesex, Middlesex Centre, Southwold, Central Elgin, Malahide, Aylmer and Bayham.
The contract was awarded by the Board of
Management for each system after a competitive bid process that involved four short-listed
companies.
Azurix North Americas winning bid is priced at
$71.2 million Cdn ($47.5 million US) over the length of the contract. This represents a savings to the communities
served of approximately $1 million per year. The
contract has an option for an additional five years.
We are very excited about this contract
award and look forward to operating the Lake Huron and Elgin Area water supply
systems," said John Stokes, president
and CEO of Azurix North America. "As a Hamilton-based company,
it is especially meaningful for us to have the opportunity to serve these communities in
southwestern Ontario.
The contract was awarded based on an
evaluation of the proponents technical, management and financial proposals. Key criteria included
demonstrated ability to exceed Ontario Drinking Water Standards, minimize environmental
impact, maintain continuity of service, protect the systems assets and provide the
best value for service.
Azurix will take over operations on January 1,
2002, from the incumbent operator, Ontario Clean Water Agency, a Crown corporation. As operator of the systems, Azurix North America
will be responsible for the delivery of safe drinking water to a population of
approximately 420,000.
With the addition of this contract, Azurix
North America operates four of the six largest outsourced water supply systems in Canada
and the United States. The company operates
more than 30 water or wastewater systems in Ontario and a total of more than 1,000
facilities in Canada and the United States.
